This book is a disturbingly realistic view of one girl's abusive upbringing. Ms. Workman does an excellent job of portraying the mindset of an abused girl as her mother and various father figures continually betray her trust and she descends further into a black hole of misery. It would be unbelievable if it weren't so possible. Thankfully, Chloe's life doesn't stay there--through the help of a police officer, a kind friend, and her own will to survive, Chloe takes her broken and damaged life and makes something beautiful of it.
I read a lot of books, and often struggle to remember the plot points a few years later. But this is a book that I will never, ever forget.
